Yoga and Metabolic Health
Yoga may support metabolic health indirectly via stress reduction, increased physical activity and improved lifestyle behaviours. Observational evidence suggests that regular yoga practitioners report higher engagement in positive health behaviours including physical activity and regulated eating patterns. Reducing chronic stress through yoga may help attenuate stress‑related metabolic dysregulation (e.g., elevated cortisol that can influence blood glucose and central adiposity), which is relevant for conditions such as type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome when combined with diet and exercise efforts.
While yoga alone is not a substitute for structured exercise or nutritional interventions in metabolic disease management, it can be a valued supportive practice that complements comprehensive lifestyle strategies recommended by NHS guidance for metabolic risk reduction.
